Sanosuke Harada

Plot Summary: The Shinsengumi leave the MC with Sanosuke, who swings his spear at the MC and warns her to keep her distance from him. The MC has no intention spending any more time with Sanosuke at all, but when a man sneaks into her room and attempts to assault her, Kondo assigns him, the only man uninterested in being around the MC, to be her bodyguard

What I think of him: Heisuke describes Sanosuke as the purest embodiment of what it means to be a samurai. Sanosuke is always willing to fight and even die to pursue his idea of justice, and he looks down on those who are willing to grovel in order to just survive. Sanosuke does not fear death and some say he even actively seeks it out. He is fierce and straightforward, with a great hatred for pretenses, so everyone will immediately know where they stand with him. He enjoys training and booze, and he will eat anything that it put in front of him. He dislikes women; he says it is because they always cry. Sanosuke is a bit of a loose cannon, but when issued a direct order from Kondo, he will obey

Nickname: None

Charm point: He can’t handle girls, not even a girl sparrow

Quote: “I wish to become stronger so that I may protect the lives of more people… And… there is one life in particular that I must protect at all costs…”

Cuddle, kiss, or push down: Have a heart-to-heart conversation, on opposite sides of a screen door

Would have eloped with:

  • Saito, because he seems so calm but his cute side really came through as well
  • Kondo, because it really felt like he was looking out for the MC

Favorite moments:

  • I thought the scene where Kondo just saved the MC from being raped and the MC just grabs her father’s medical journal and starts crying while he watches was super poignant. This isn’t usually the type of thing I would call out, but this scene really stuck with me
  • The MC standing up to Sanosuke and telling him that she doesn’t care what he does, she’s not going to let him leave before she treats his injuries
  • The MC’s determination to wait fot Sanosuke even though she knows that she might only be greeting him to send him off once more
  • How everyone else knows how the MC and Sanosuke feel before they even realize it
  • How the MC and Sanosuke learn from the other’s vastly different life view; the MC learning that you have to be willing to risk your life to fight for what you believe in and Sanosuke learning that you have to try to live to fight for your ideals
  • The Written by Fate ending was perfect

Worst moments:

  • I’m not convinced that Kondo, with his ideals, and Hijikata, who is so straitlaced, would bow down so easily to a man who is so obviously abusing his power, especially not when he is manhandling the MC, who they took in as their charge
  • The MC seems to have really built up trust for everyone so why did she seriously believe that they were going to torture Sanosuke?
  • It took forever for the MC to realize that she loved Sanosuke

Worth the price of admission?: This route was enjoyable, but not terribly romantic. I sort of felt like I was playing a Meeting Him route in Her Love in the Force, and I kind of wanted a second part for the relationship to develop a bit more. That is, of course, not to say that the romance doesn’t develop in this route, there is and I do enjoy the MC’s slower build up in feelings. Things are really brought to a head later in the route where a time limit is imposed which sort of speeds things along with the help of the other characters doing some prodding to help the MC realize her feelings. I like Sanosuke well enough, I like his route well enough, and I look forward to seeing how things develop for him in the future, but I don’t think that I am in love with Sanosuke as of yet

After the main route (POSSIBLE SPOILERS):

  • His PoV: The Main route from Sanosuke’s point-of-view. I didn’t feel like this was particularly illuminating, although you do see what a big role the MC played in reversing the townspeople’s opinion about the Shinsengumi
  • Hearts in Training: The MC and Sanosuke are invited to a party that the townspeople are throwing to celebrate Sanosuke’s pardon. This is pretty cute since both the MC and Sanosuke are in their awkward phase of their relationship and are still learning about being together
  • Love’s Command: Sanosuke’s sense of justice is called into question by someone he intended to help. This causes him to hesitate and lands the MC into a dangerous situation. I hate this story, and it is mostly due to the MC and her decision. I know she was trying to help, but it was super stupid. And when Sanosuke comes to save her she’s like “I knew you would come for me” and I wanted to chuck my iPad across the room, because what she was actually thinking was that she wished she would be able to see him again… I just really have this story
