Company:  Voltage

Cost: Free-to-Play

Synopsis: The MC lives in Owari working at the restaurant her father ran before he was conscripted and died. One day the town seems to be full of some of the era’s hotshots and she runs into several famous warriors throughout the day. But the MC has more immediate concerns than the frequent battles. Some local hoodlums and the slimy local magistrate have conspired to shut down her family’s restaurant, unless her younger brother, Yahiko, agrees to become a poison tester. Determined to save her brother, the MC dresses herself as a man and sneaks off to take her brother’s place no matter what dangers might befall her

MC: The MC in this game can be defined by two main characteristics: hardworking and domestic. s a hard worker. She will always throw herself into work, especially if it involves cooking or cleaning. She cares deeply for her family, and has a strong desire to protect them since her father is gone. She wishes for the land to  become peaceful and hates war since her father died in battle, but she doesn’t really think about how it can or will come to pass. She can be willful and stubborn and wants to control her own destiny, but she is also aware that she lacks the power to soldier through many situations

Guys:

  • Hideyoshi Toyotomi: A commoner making a place for himself in the Oda clan. He excels at smooth talking and uses his abilities to help others out
  • Ieyasu Tokugawa: One of Nobunaga’s retainers. A capabable man who is alternatively charming or immature and extremely sadistic
  • Kojuro Sasaki: Masamune’s loyal and super dependable retainer. He looks kind and unassuming but his is very skillful

Impressions: Samurai Love Ballad PARTY is Voltage’s second game taking place in the Sengoku Jidai, the first being Sakura Amidst Chaos, and almost all of love interests are making a repeat appearance. None of the characters are exact replicas, but there are some traits that characters share across the games that cannot be attributed to faithfulness to the historical figure (like Yukimura’s awkwardness). And, of course, there are other characters who differ drastically from their counterparts. I wouldn’t claim that one game is drastically superior than the other since the stories of Samurai Love Ballad PARTY are significantly smaller in length and scale, but this game does have a more diverse set of personalities amongst the love interests.

The art is refined, lovely and I would describe it as pleasantly “soft”, and although some of the default sprites can be a little generic, once the guys get into their armor all of the sprites are more visual interesting.

One interesting thing about this game is that the routes begin as a share route between two characters which splits off into individual routes after three chapters. In general I don’t mind shared routes, but in a game with such short routes I wish that the split occurred even a chapter sooner, or that you could skip to the split after the first time you played through it

For this game, you get five tickets a day, which I think is pretty standard and perfectly fine, but Voltage handles it particularly well since the routes are paced perfectly to read five scenarios at a time

Favorite Guy: Mitsunari

Favorite Route: Yukimura, Mitsunari
